Using A Video Script

You're probably thinking why do you need to use a video script. I mean, your video is only a two minute promo ad, not a Hollywood blockbuster right?

Creating a script for every video you shoot, from a 60 second web video ad to a 60 minute training DVD, will mean a more professional looking video for your viewers and lots of time (and money) saved by you in the long run.

I know it's tempting to just get stuck in and work 'on the fly', but planning the video through from the beginning to the end really will save you a lot of headaches later on.

A video script is actually very simple. It's just a table with four headings;

[1] Video start in time line e.g. 34 secs

[2] Length of video clip e.g. 5 secs

[3] What I want the viewer to hear - e.g. type of music, sound effect, voice over etc.

[4] What I want the viewer to see e.g. video, image, text etc.

You are welcome to copy and print this script for your own use.

Try to be as detailed as possible when filling in your script. Write down the actual words you want to say in each video clip, describe the style of music you want to use, the video graphic you want to use, the text effects etc.

The more detailed it is, the better your end video will be.

Of course these things aren't set in stone. You can (and will) change things when you start editing the video, but using a script and having a clear plan of what you are trying to create will mean the difference between your video being finished in hours rather than days!
